CBS Sports ranks 49ers, Browns at opposite ends of 2026 QB spectrum
The San Francisco 49ers are identified as having the league’s strongest quarterback room, while the Cleveland Browns face significant uncertainty, according to a new assessment by CBS Sports.
CBS Sports has published a comprehensive evaluation of National Football League quarterback situations for the 2026 season, categorising teams into the five best and five worst scenarios. The analysis underscores the critical importance of roster depth, noting that a team’s ability to withstand injury or underperformance at the most pivotal position often dictates its overall viability. The report identifies the San Francisco 49ers as holding the strongest position, while the Cleveland Browns are ranked as facing the most significant structural uncertainty.
The 49ers’ top ranking is anchored by starter Brock Purdy, who established himself as a highly efficient distributor with a passer rating that stands as the highest in franchise history. The strength of San Francisco’s situation is largely attributed to the presence of Mac Jones as a capable backup. Jones demonstrated his value by going 5-3 as a starter during Purdy’s absence, including a notable victory over the Los Angeles Rams. This depth allows the 49ers to maintain offensive continuity, a factor that distinguishes them from other contenders in the league.
In stark contrast, the Cleveland Browns are identified as having the worst quarterback situation due to a lack of clarity surrounding their primary options. The roster includes Deshaun Watson, who remains on a lucrative contract despite not playing since October 2024, alongside Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel. The uncertainty is compounded by the performance of Sanders, who struggled with completion percentages and interceptions in his limited starts. New head coach Todd Monken has publicly criticised the room’s performance, highlighting the chaotic nature of the competition for the starting role.
Other teams evaluated in the report include the Atlanta Falcons, Miami Dolphins, Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets, Baltimore Ravens, Los Angeles Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, and Cincinnati Bengals. The Baltimore Ravens edged out the Buffalo Bills for a spot in the best five, primarily due to the reliability of backup Tyler Huntley compared to the Bills’ less experienced second-string options. Conversely, the Jets and Dolphins were scrutinised for their reliance on quarterbacks with limited starting experience or significant question marks regarding their fit within their respective offensive schemes.
The assessment also highlighted the Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs as having strong situations. The Rams benefit from the leadership of Matthew Stafford and the development of rookie Ty Simpson, while the Chiefs retain Patrick Mahomes alongside an electric backup in Justin Fields. The report suggests that while star power is essential, the presence of a competent backup is the defining factor in a team’s resilience for the upcoming season.
