CBS Sports identifies Texas as favourite for 2026 College World Series title
The outlet’s June 11 publication predicts Texas will defeat Georgia in the opening round and North Carolina in the championship series, citing superior roster construction over other contenders.

CBS Sports released its comprehensive predictions for the 2026 College World Series on June 11, identifying the University of Texas as the overall favourite to claim the national championship. The analysis, published ahead of the tournament in Omaha, Nebraska, examines the opening-round matchups and the finals among the final eight teams, suggesting that roster construction and pitching depth will be the primary determinants of success.
The outlet predicts Texas will defeat Georgia in the opening-round showdown, a contest described as the most significant match of the weekend. Despite Georgia’s nation-leading home run total of 174 and strong performances from Golden Spikes frontrunner Daniel Jackson, CBS Sports attributes the predicted loss to the Bulldogs to Texas’s pitching depth and offensive output. The Longhorns are backed by pitcher Dylan Volantis, who holds a 2.03 earned run average and 126 strikeouts, alongside closer Sam Cozart.
In the other opening-round predictions, West Virginia is tipped to defeat Troy, North Carolina to beat Ole Miss, and Oklahoma to overcome Alabama. West Virginia’s predicted victory is linked to run support for the Big 12’s best pitching staff, featuring Big 12 Pitcher of the Year Maxx Yehl. North Carolina’s success is attributed to ace pitcher Jason DeCaro and clutch hitting from Owen Hull, while Oklahoma’s prediction cites the dominance of pitchers Cord Rager and Xander Mercurius.
Texas’s predicted path to the title includes a championship series victory over North Carolina. The analysis notes that while the Tar Heels possess arguably the best rotation in the country, Texas’s pitching tandem of Volantis, Ruger Riojas, and Luke Harrison is deemed equally potent. The outlet argues that Texas’s offensive power, driven by freshman Anthony Pack Jr. and the trio of Aiden Robbins, Carson Tinney, and Casey Borba, would put greater pressure on North Carolina’s arms than vice versa.
The publication emphasises that winning the opening round is critical, noting that only three teams have rallied from a first-game loss to win the title this century. Texas is viewed as having the requisite arms to contain the most powerful lineup in the sport, with sufficient depth to stave off elimination should they face adversity. The analysis concludes that the Longhorns’ balanced roster and pitching stability give them the edge in the heavyweight bout against North Carolina.
