Cavaliers secure Watson in multi-team NBA trade
Cleveland finalises a complex three-team deal to acquire Peyton Watson, while Denver and Los Angeles restructure their rosters through draft pick exchanges.
The Cleveland Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets, and Los Angeles Clippers have finalised a multi-team trade that sends Peyton Watson to Cleveland and Max Strus to Los Angeles. According to sources, the agreement was reached on Wednesday, marking a significant shift in roster composition for all three franchises.
Watson, 23, is set to sign a new four-year, $88 million contract with the Cavaliers. His agents from Klutch Sports confirmed the deal includes a player option and a trade kicker. The move follows a period of intense restricted free agency negotiations, during which Watson’s representatives explored interest from the Milwaukee Bucks, Portland Trail Blazers, and the Clippers before accepting the guaranteed offer from Cleveland.
The Cavaliers, who were swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals, have aggressively retooled their roster in the past week. Having previously traded Dennis Schroder, the team is now bringing in Watson for his athleticism and scoring ability. Watson enjoyed a career year in Denver, averaging career highs in points (14.6), rebounds (4.9), assists (2.1), and steals (0.9). He also recorded four 30-point games, a first for the player in his first three NBA seasons.
In the asset exchange, Denver receives an unprotected 2031 first-round pick from Cleveland and a 2032 second-round pick from the Sacramento Kings. The Clippers are sending a 2027 second-round pick, originally acquired from the Philadelphia 76ers, to Cleveland to facilitate the acquisition of Strus via a trade exception.
The deal also involves the Washington Wizards, who will receive Tre Mann and the 2027 second-round pick from the Cavaliers. This complex arrangement allows the Cavaliers to offload assets while securing a key defensive and offensive contributor.
Watson’s defensive impact has been notable since entering the league in 2022-23. He ranks second in field goal percentage allowed as a contesting defender among players to contest at least 2,000 shots. The trade represents a strategic pivot for Cleveland as they look to build a deeper roster for the upcoming season.
