Cardinals extend I-70 series dominance with 4-2 victory over Royals
St Louis maintains its historical interleague superiority as Kansas City’s road record remains the second-worst in Major League Baseball following Saturday’s defeat.

The St Louis Cardinals secured a 4-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday, extending their institutional advantage in the annual I-70 series. The win contributes to a strong recent performance for St Louis, which has won four of its last five games, while the Royals continue to navigate significant structural challenges, having lost six consecutive matches and holding the second-worst road record in Major League Baseball.
The contest, delayed by 46 minutes due to rain, highlighted a disparity in operational efficiency between the two franchises. Alec Burleson drove in two runs, including a critical two-out RBI single in the eighth inning that extended the Cardinals' lead to 4-1. This offensive output was supported by Kyle Leahy, who recorded his first career start by pitching six innings and allowing one run on five hits, improving his personal record to 5-3.
Kansas City’s pitching efforts were anchored by Noah Cameron, who worked six innings but surrendered three runs on five hits, dropping his record to 2-3. The Royals managed to tie the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning through Maikel Garcia’s one-out double and Vinnie Pasquantino’s two-out single, but they were unable to maintain momentum against St Louis’s subsequent offensive surge.
Individual milestones underscored the Cardinals’ tactical resilience. Thomas Saggese ended a 0-for-30 hitless streak, the longest active in MLB at the time, with a leadoff single in the fifth. Masyn Winn later drove in Saggese via a sacrifice fly to establish a 3-1 lead. George Soriano recorded his second save in the ninth inning, despite surrendering a leadoff home run to Jac Caglianone.
The historical context of the rivalry remains heavily skewed in St Louis’s favour. Since interleague play began in 1997, the Cardinals hold an 81-55 record against the Royals. The series concludes on Sunday with Stephen Kolak facing Andre Pallante, a matchup that will test whether Kansas City can reverse its poor road performance or if St Louis will further cement its institutional dominance.
