Canadiens face elimination after 4-0 defeat to Hurricanes in Eastern Conference finals
The Canadiens’ home playoff record drops to 2-6 as Carolina takes control of the series with a dominant performance, setting up a decisive Game 5 in North Carolina on Friday.

The Montreal Canadiens have been pushed to the brink of elimination after suffering a 4-0 defeat against the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals on Wednesday night. The loss extends Carolina’s series lead to 3-1, marking the first time in these playoffs that Montreal has faced multiple games standing between them and the postseason.
Carolina controlled the contest from the outset, outshooting the Canadiens 43-18 and holding a 95-45 edge in total shot attempts. The Hurricanes established early dominance with goals from Sebastian Aho, Jordan Staal, and Logan Stankoven in the first two periods. Andrei Svechnikov added an empty-net goal in the final minutes to seal the shutout victory.
Montreal’s goaltender Jakub Dobes made 39 saves but conceded four goals, a performance that fell short of preventing the deficit. Despite the scoreline, the Canadiens struggled to generate meaningful offensive pressure, managing only 65 shots on net throughout the entire series. Carolina’s defence blocked 68 pucks, further stifling Montreal’s attack.
The defeat highlights a persistent issue for the Canadiens, whose home playoff record has now fallen to 2-6. Captain Nick Suzuki recorded zero points in the game, extending a scoreless streak of three games. The team has now lost three consecutive matches, a first occurrence since November, and has failed to explain the disparity between their road and home performances.
Carolina goaltender Frederik Andersen recorded his fifth career playoff shutout, setting a new franchise record. As the final whistle blew, a chorus of chants from the Bell Centre crowd urged the players to shoot the puck, a reaction that players, including defenseman Lane Hutson, found unhelpful.
Dobes, who was celebrating his 25th birthday, accepted responsibility for the loss and described the team as "super underdogs" heading into the next matchup. He emphasised that the team must improve their execution and focus on their upcoming road game in Carolina on Friday to keep their season alive.
