Canada and Mexico secure Olympic flag football berths as IFAF championships conclude in Germany
With the United States automatically qualified as hosts, results from the International Federation of American Football championships in Düsseldorf have confirmed four additional national teams for the Olympic tournament, leaving three spots in each gender to be decided by the Q-Series in June 2028.
The composition of the flag football tournament for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is taking definitive shape following the conclusion of the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) championships in Düsseldorf, Germany. Canada’s men’s and women’s teams, alongside Italy’s men’s team and Mexico’s women’s team, have officially secured qualification for the Olympic field, joining the host nation United States.
The qualification mechanism for the inaugural Olympic flag football event required the top two non-USA finishers in each gender’s 16-team field to earn automatic bids. With the United States holding automatic qualification as the host country, the stakes for the remaining nations were high, culminating in decisive outcomes during the medal matches on Sunday.
Canada’s women’s team claimed the gold medal with a 27-20 victory over the USA, securing their third world title and an Olympic berth. This marks Canada’s first world championship in the sport since 2014. In the men’s competition, Italy secured their spot by reaching the gold-medal game, where they were defeated 46-26 by the USA.
The final two qualification spots were determined in the bronze-medal matches, both of which required intense finishes. Canada’s men’s team forced overtime with a touchdown 18 seconds into regulation to tie Mexico at 26-26. They subsequently scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion on their opening overtime drive and intercepted Mexico on the ensuing possession to win 34-26.
Mexico’s women’s team, currently ranked number one in the world, secured the final women’s Olympic spot by defeating Great Britain 20-19. Great Britain had mounted a significant rally from a 13-point halftime deficit but fell short in the bronze-medal contest.
With these results, four of the six teams in each gender’s Olympic field are now confirmed. The remaining three spots for both the men’s and women’s tournaments will be determined by the Olympic Q-Series competition, scheduled for June 2028. The first stage of this qualifying series will take place in Montreal from June 1 to 4, followed by the second stage in Orlando, Florida, from June 8 to 11.
Flag football is set to make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles Games, which are scheduled to commence on July 14, 2028. While the national teams have qualified, individual player rosters have not yet been established. Each country’s national Olympic committee will determine the final squad selections prior to the Games, a process that allows for the potential inclusion of NFL players currently in training camps.
