Four-star LB Elyjah Staples commits to Cal, breaks down his decision
Marquez High School prospect cites defensive staff and academic environment as decisive factors

The University of California, Berkeley, has secured the commitment of four-star linebacker Elyjah Staples, a prospect from Marquez High School in Los Angeles. Ranked No. 353 nationally by the Rivals Industry Ranking, Staples selected the Bears over Brigham Young University, concluding a recruitment process that saw him narrow his final choices to two institutions just a week prior to his decision.

Staples announced his commitment during dinner on his recent official visit to Berkeley, noting that the timing was unexpected. He stated that while he had anticipated travelling to BYU for a visit, the opportunity presented by Cal proved too significant to decline. The prospect described the decision as feeling natural, emphasising that the university offered the best all-around fit for his personal and athletic development.

A primary driver in Staples’ selection was the university’s defensive infrastructure. He specifically praised head coach Tosh Lupoi, describing him as the central figure in the program’s direction. Staples highlighted the defensive staff’s collective NFL experience and the scheme’s alignment with his projected role as an outside linebacker capable of playing in space and rushing the passer.

Beyond the field, Staples pointed to the academic environment and the campus atmosphere in Berkeley as critical components of his choice. He noted that the city and the university’s academic offerings provided a comprehensive fit that matched his broader goals. This selection marks a shift from a month ago, when BYU was considered the team to beat for the Los Angeles athlete.

The recruitment of Staples coincides with a significant weekend for the Cal program, which is expected to see additional commitments in the coming days. Staples brings a versatile athletic background to the university, having earned League Player of the Year honours in both football and basketball as a sophomore, while also competing in volleyball and track.
