Cadeau returns to Michigan as Wolverines reshape roster ahead of 2026-27 season
The University of Michigan has secured the services of its NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, while navigating complex personnel decisions regarding draft-eligible forwards and incoming transfers.

The University of Michigan has finalised its roster strategy for the 2026-27 season with the return of Elliot Cadeau, the 2026 NCAA Tournament Final Four Most Outstanding Player. Although the Wolverines had secured a commitment from Cadeau in April, he elected to enter the NBA Draft process to gain professional feedback and experience before rejoining the collegiate programme. Michigan coach Dusty May indicated that the draft circuit provided valuable developmental benefits, allowing Cadeau to refine his preparation for the upcoming campaign.
Cadeau’s decision to remain with the institution was deemed critical given the team’s structural needs. Backup point guard LJ Cason is expected to take a redshirt season following a torn ACL sustained on 27 February. Cadeau, who averaged 12.3 points, 7.5 assists and 1.7 steals during the tournament run, will now assume a central role in the Big Ten hierarchy. With key conference rivals Braden Smith, Donovan Dent, and Bennett Stirtz out of eligibility, Cadeau enters the season in a position of elevated standing among the conference’s point guards.
To bolster the frontcourt, Michigan has added Tennessee transfer JP Estrella through the transfer portal. Estrella, who averaged 10 points and 5.4 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per game during the 2025-26 season, offers significant versatility. According to Synergy data, he converted post-up situations at a 60% clip, and CBS Sports portal evaluator Isaac Trotter awarded the fit an “A” grade, citing his ability to finish over shot-blockers and make quick reads. At 6-11, Estrella provides the Wolverines with optionality to play either forward or centre.
The retention of Cadeau and the addition of Estrella stabilise the backcourt and frontcourt, with shooting guard Trey McKenney also eligible to return after a standout freshman season. Winters Grady remains the only current player indicating an intent to transfer, having appeared in nine games during his first year. The roster construction suggests a focus on continuity and positional depth as the team prepares for the next competitive cycle.
However, significant uncertainty remains regarding the futures of forwards Morez Johnson Jr and Aday Mara, both of whom have declared for the NBA Draft. Mara is currently projected as a lottery pick, potentially No. 12 to the Oklahoma City Thunder, making a return to school unlikely barring a change in circumstances before the 27 May stay-or-go deadline. Johnson’s situation is more complex; while his combine measurements suggest potential for either forward position in the NBA, he faces a decision between a professional contract and a financial incentive to return to Michigan.
