Media mogul Byron Allen has acquired a 52 per cent stake in BuzzFeed for $120 million, a transaction that provides critical capital to the digital publisher following a going concern statement in its recent financials. The deal, structured with $20 million paid at closing and the remaining $100 million due in five years, marks a significant shift in control for the company, which was once valued at $1.6 billion but faced substantial doubt regarding its ability to continue operating without additional funds.

Under the terms of the agreement, co-founder Jonah Peretti will step down as chief executive officer and assume the role of president of BuzzFeed AI. Allen, who owns The Weather Channel and other media assets, will become the new CEO. Peretti converted his super-voting shares into normal common stock, transferring control to Allen, who cited the company’s strong brand and direct audience as key assets. The transaction aims to leverage Allen’s expertise in business development and advertiser relations while allowing Peretti to focus on the company’s strategic pivot towards artificial intelligence.

Peretti described the restructuring as a necessary evolution from the organic growth era of social media to a model driven by deals and direct audience engagement. He noted that the current landscape requires executives who can navigate complex partnerships and capital markets, areas where Allen excels. The new leadership structure is designed to support a turnaround that prioritises profitability and long-term stability, moving away from the previous reliance on platform algorithms for traffic distribution.

A central pillar of the new strategy is the launch of BuzzFeed AI, which will oversee the development of new applications such as BF Island, a social messaging app utilising generative AI, and Conjure, a daily challenge camera app. Peretti stated that these tools are intended to create "BuzzFeed-shaped objects" and compete with platforms like YouTube by enabling faster content iteration and personalised user experiences. The division will also integrate AI across the core business to enhance creative output and operational efficiency.

Despite the heavy investment in AI technology, Peretti confirmed that HuffPost will maintain its commitment to human-led journalism. He emphasised that while AI may assist in research and data gathering, the publication will not publish AI-written news to preserve reader trust. The broader vision involves using AI to elevate professional content creation and foster new forms of digital interaction, aiming to rebuild cultural relevance through direct, high-quality engagement rather than algorithmic dependency.
