Burrow endorses Bengals’ defensive overhaul as franchise seeks to end playoff drought
Cincinnati’s aggressive acquisition of Dexter Lawrence and other defensive additions has earned Joe Burrow’s public support, though the team faces significant historical hurdles in high-scoring losses.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has publicly endorsed the team’s significant offseason roster overhaul, marking a distinct shift from his previous demands for change following the team’s playoff elimination. Speaking during voluntary workouts, Burrow stated the team has "everything we need in that locker room," contrasting sharply with his post-playoff elimination comments in December where he demanded change. Burrow described the current roster as the "most talented" he has seen since joining the team, citing specific defensive acquisitions as key drivers of this optimism.
The acquisition of defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence was the headline move of the offseason, involving the Bengals trading their No. 10 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft to the New York Giants. The Giants subsequently used that pick to select offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa. Burrow acknowledged the steep price for a player who turns 29 in November and is coming off a down season, but noted he was "fired up" by the decision to secure what he termed the best defensive tackle in the league.
Beyond Lawrence, the Bengals have bolstered their defensive line with the signing of edge rusher Boye Mafe and defensive lineman Jonathan Allen, alongside the drafting of edge rusher Cashius Howell at No. 41 overall. Burrow specifically highlighted the addition of safety Bryan Cook, describing him as the best free-agent safety available. He pointed to the increased depth on the defensive line as critical components in addressing the unit's previous struggles.
The rebuild aims to address a defense that has contributed to seven losses in high-scoring games over the past three years, with the team seeking to end a three-year playoff drought. Burrow referenced the team's recent struggles, noting that over the past three years, the Bengals have lost seven games despite scoring 30 or more points, the most such losses in the NFL. No other team has recorded more than four such losses during that period.
Burrow is currently 48 passing touchdowns away from breaking Andy Dalton’s all-time franchise record, a mark last approached by Aaron Rodgers in 2020. He played in only eight games last season due to turf toe; the Bengals went 5-3 in those games but 1-8 in the games he missed. The offense retains key players including Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Chase Brown, and all five offensive line starters, providing a potent attack to complement the revamped defense.
