Burnley salvage draw against West Ham on Championship return
Nicky Hayen secures first league point as manager while West Ham’s promotion ambitions face early test
Burnley and West Ham United played out a 2-2 draw in the Sky Bet Championship at Turf Moor, with the visitors surrendering a two-goal lead in the final stages of the match. West Ham had established dominance through goals from Max Kilman and Manor Solomon, but Zian Flemming scored twice late on to secure a point for the home side.
West Ham, widely viewed as favourites for immediate promotion to the Premier League, appeared poised for victory when Solomon rifled home in the 72nd minute. This doubled the lead provided by Kilman, who headed in from Jarrod Bowen’s free-kick in the 10th minute. The goal marked Kilman’s first for the club in 68 appearances, ending a significant drought for the defender.
The result provided Nicky Hayen with his first league point as Burnley manager, coinciding with his 46th birthday. The draw also prevented Burnley from suffering their first home Championship defeat since April 2023, preserving their home record despite a match where they often struggled to convert early opportunities.
West Ham’s squad retains significant depth following their relegation, having kept key player Jarrod Bowen despite selling Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville for substantial fees. The club further underlined its promotion credentials this week by breaking the Championship transfer record with a £22m deal for Arne Engels, although the new signing was not involved in the fixture.
Former West Ham manager David Moyes was in attendance at Turf Moor to observe the contest. While Nuno Espirito Santo’s side controlled much of the possession and quality, Burnley’s persistence in the final minutes, highlighted by Flemming’s 83rd-minute penalty and stoppage-time strike, ensured the points were shared.
