Bungie confirms final Destiny 2 update for June 2026 as studio pivots to new IP
The studio will cease weekly blog updates and focus on an unspecified new title outside the Destiny universe, following the release of Marathon.

Bungie has confirmed that the final major update for Destiny 2 will launch on June 9, 2026, marking the end of the studio’s active development cycle for the franchise. The announcement, made on Thursday, signals a strategic shift for the Sony-owned developer as it moves its focus towards a new beginning.
Following the release of this final update, the game will remain playable, mirroring the post-support status of the original Destiny released in 2014. Bungie stated that many changes in the update aim to ensure the game remains a welcoming environment for players. However, the studio will cease its weekly blog entries, which will enter a form of hibernation until further details regarding the studio's future direction are available.
The decision comes after Bungie released Marathon, an extraction shooter, earlier this year. While the title has not reached the commercial heights of Destiny 2 at its peak, it has been well-received. The studio confirmed it is currently developing a new title that will exist outside the Destiny universe, indicating a departure from the live-service model that defined much of its recent history.
Bungie’s trajectory has shifted significantly since Sony acquired the studio for $3.6 billion in 2022. The acquisition occurred during a period of aggressive live-service expansion, a strategy the company has since scaled back. The years following the takeover have been marked by internal difficulties, including layoffs and delays regarding the release of Marathon.
The live-service gaming sector has faced considerable instability recently, and Bungie’s pivot suggests a recalibration of its long-term strategy. The studio has not yet disclosed specific details regarding the nature or release timeline of its next new title, but affirmed its commitment to developing games that excite both the team and its player base.
