Jasprit Bumrah steps in for absent Pandya and Yadav, securing six-wicket victory over Punjab Kings

Jasprit Bumrah assumed the Mumbai Indians captaincy for the first time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on Saturday, May 16, guiding the franchise to a six-wicket victory against the Punjab Kings. The leadership assignment was necessitated by the absence of regular captain Hardik Pandya and vice-captain Suryakumar Yadav from the fixture.

The result, however, did little to alter the Mumbai Indians’ standing in the tournament, as the team had already been eliminated from the playoff race prior to the match. Despite the lack of competitive stakes, Bumrah, who has represented the franchise since his debut in 2013, described the experience as highly enjoyable, citing favourable weather conditions and a well-maintained ground.

In the post-match presentation, Bumrah drew a cultural parallel to the 2001 Bollywood film *Nayak: The Real Hero*, in which the protagonist unexpectedly serves as Chief Minister for a single day. "Nayak Dekha Hai? Ek Din ka Mukhya Mantri," Bumrah remarked, referencing the film’s plot where a television cameraman challenges a corrupt politician and briefly assumes political power.

Bumrah’s leadership portfolio extends well beyond domestic cricket. He has previously captained the Indian national team in two Test matches during the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia and the rescheduled Birmingham Test against England in 2022. Additionally, he led India in two T20I matches, winning both encounters.

When asked about the possibility of leading the side in One Day International cricket, Bumrah remained pragmatic. "Now the only game that is left is ODI cricket. But I don't see that happening," he said, joking about the likelihood of such an appointment. He concluded by noting his satisfaction with the role, stating, "Really happy. I had good fun... So enjoyed my time."
