Browns’ Structural Overhaul Shifts 2026 Outlook as Monken Takes Helm
With Todd Monken replacing Kevin Stefanski and Myles Garrett traded, the franchise faces a pivotal season defined by offensive restructuring and defensive transition.

The Cleveland Browns have initiated a significant restructuring of their organisational framework ahead of the 2026 season, marked by the appointment of Todd Monken as head coach and the trade of reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. Monken, who previously served as the team’s offensive coordinator in 2019, replaces Kevin Stefanski following a period of stagnation that saw the franchise miss the playoffs for 17 years prior to Stefanski’s tenure. The coaching change coincides with the departure of defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, signalling a broad shift in strategic direction for the franchise.
Central to this overhaul is the trade of Garrett to acquire edge rusher Jared Verse and multiple draft picks, a move executed on June 1 that altered the team’s competitive standing. According to market data from DraftKings, the transaction shifted the Browns’ division title odds from +1600 to +1900. While the win total was adjusted to 6.5, analysts note that the initial impact on the make-or-miss playoffs market remained neutral, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding the new coaching staff’s ability to stabilise the roster.
The quarterback room presents a complex internal competition, with Deshaun Watson set to contest the starting role against 2025 draft picks Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel. Watson, who has not played more than seven games in a season since leaving Houston, enters a cycle that has seen the Browns utilise a different leading passer in each of the last five years. The franchise’s priority in the draft was to enhance offensive line versatility and add receiving weapons, attempts to address a passing offence that ranked among the league’s worst on a per-play basis.
Defensively, the team must navigate the loss of Garrett, whose presence previously anchored a pass rush that finished third in sacks per pass attempt. The departure of Schwartz adds another layer of complexity to a unit that has historically struggled to compensate for offensive inefficiencies. The Browns have recorded a positive point differential only three times since rejoining the league in 1999, with Stefanski’s +34 differential in 2023 representing the franchise’s best mark in that period.
Analysts suggest that the team’s trajectory hinges on Monken’s capacity to generate offensive success and the emergence of a productive quarterback option. With an early-season Thursday night matchup against the Steelers and potential favourable games against the Jets, Raiders, and Giants, the schedule offers opportunities to accumulate wins outside the division. Betting markets currently offer odds of +300 or better for an Over 7.5 wins, contingent on the new leadership delivering immediate results.
