Milwaukee beat San Diego 3–2 in Game 1 of their National League Division Series, taking the lead on William Contreras’s solo home run in the seventh inning. The best-of-five series continues Sunday.

The Brewers had trailed 2–0 before Jackson Chourio hit a two-run homer in the third to level the score. Contreras then broke the tie with his seventh-inning shot.

San Diego threatened late, loading the bases in the seventh and putting runners on in the eighth, but could not score. In the ninth, with a runner on first and one out, Ty France hit a high fly that struck the American Family Field roof before Chourio caught it in fair territory.

Under the stadium’s ground rules, a ball striking the roof or its cables in fair territory can be caught for an out. The Padres unsuccessfully challenged the ruling that France was out; Jackson Merrill then lined out to end the game.

Milwaukee opened its postseason after a franchise-record 103-win season. Game 2 is scheduled for Sunday, with San Diego’s Michael King facing Milwaukee’s Logan Henderson.
