Boox Picco compact e-reader expected to launch in November
Boox’s small e-reader will feature a touchscreen, customisable page-turn buttons and USB-C and Wi-Fi file transfers, but its price remains undisclosed.
Boox’s Picco compact e-reader is expected to launch in November, according to reporting by The Verge, after the company teased the device in July as a competitor to the Xteink X4.
The Picco will have a 3.97-inch touchscreen e-paper display and physical page-turn buttons. Users will reportedly be able to assign different actions to short and long presses of the buttons.
Books can be stored on a microSD card, with files also transferable directly over USB-C or Wi-Fi through a companion app. The device will not include the rear magnets used by Xteink devices to attach an e-reader to a phone.
Unlike Boox’s other devices, the Picco will run a stripped-down Linux-based operating system rather than Android. Boox is also expected to include a timer, to-do list and reading-stats tracker.
The company has not disclosed the Picco’s price, battery life, Bluetooth support or whether it will support audiobooks. It also remains unclear whether the device will include onboard storage, while the openness and hackability of its firmware have not been confirmed.
