BMW’s Neue Klasse M concept brings next-gen EV tech to motorsports
Electric performance sedan previews 1,000hp output and next-generation architecture

BMW has unveiled the Neue Klasse M concept, a two-door electric sedan that integrates next-generation electric vehicle technology with the brand’s motorsports heritage. Built on the Neue Klasse architecture, the vehicle serves as a preview for the upcoming production M3 ZA0, which is scheduled for release next spring. The automaker estimates the production model will produce 1,000 horsepower, marking a significant escalation in power for its electrified performance lineup.

The concept debuts a new design language for the M division, characterised by a shark-like front end and the introduction of M Yellow Lights. Inspired by GT racing and the automaker’s M Hybrid V8, these lights, along with three-dimensional Track Lights, are set to become signature features for future M vehicles. The exterior also features a V-shaped air vent on the hood for EV drivetrain cooling, a trimaran-style bumper inspired by high-speed sailing boats, and a ducktail spoiler with a floating diffuser to increase downforce.

Under the skin, the vehicle utilises an 800-volt system paired with a 100kWh battery housing. It employs sixth-generation cylindrical cells designed for high energy delivery and fast charging. The battery housing is structurally integrated into both the front and rear axles to enhance driving dynamics and improve rigidity. Power is managed by four electric motors controlled by the Heart of Joy central computer, which allows for wheel-specific control of the drivetrain and braking.

Inside, the cabin features four bucket seats made from integrated natural fibres, with black nubuck leather applied to the steering wheel, door panels, and roll bar. A floating dashboard wrapped in black knit material includes M-specific hexagonal backlighting. Performance-oriented red highlights are placed on the M gear selector, steering wheel shift paddles, and digital displays, reinforcing the vehicle’s track-focused intent.

BMW states that the concept was unveiled just in time for Le Mans, adhering to the guiding principle “Born on the racetrack. Made for the streets.” The upcoming M3 ZA0 will be the first production vehicle to bear the proper M badge in the electric era, following a series of i-series M performance vehicles. The concept shares similarities with the recently revamped i3 and is considered closer to production reality than the VDX vehicle introduced last year.
