Blizzard plans StarCraft return as open-world shooter in 2030
The reported project would move StarCraft beyond its traditional real-time strategy format, with the United Earth Directorate preparing to fight the Zerg.

Blizzard plans to bring StarCraft back in 2030 with a game described as an open-world shooter, according to The Verge. The project would mark a departure from the series’ established top-down real-time strategy format.
Blizzard vice-president Dan Hay reportedly revealed the project at BlizzCon, alongside a cinematic trailer. The trailer focused on the human United Earth Directorate preparing for conflict with the Zerg, while the Protoss received limited mention.
The reported footage portrayed a militarised, propaganda-driven human faction confronting the realities of battle. Details on gameplay, platforms and the project’s development status have not been provided, and no specific release date was announced beyond the 2030 target.
The project would be Blizzard’s second reported attempt to take StarCraft into the shooter genre. StarCraft: Ghost entered development in 2002 before being cancelled in 2014 after years in development.
StarCraft II’s final expansion pack was released about a decade before the reported announcement. The available material does not confirm whether Blizzard’s 2030 plan is firm or whether the new game’s open-world shooter format will remain unchanged.
