Jude Bellingham has downplayed a viral confrontation with Lionel Messi during England’s 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, characterising the incident as a minor disagreement over a foul rather than a serious altercation. The 23-year-old Real Madrid midfielder stated that the exchange in the first half was nothing malicious, despite the moment generating significant attention online.

Speaking after the match, Bellingham explained that the interaction stemmed from a dispute regarding a previous foul. “We were discussing a foul, actually,” he said. “It was nothing bad. I thought there was a foul earlier, and he said: ‘What about the one on me?’ I said: ‘You’re strong enough to take it.’” He added that it was a privilege to play against Messi, denying any intent to provoke.

The semi-final, played in Atlanta, ended nil-all at half-time before Argentina secured a late comeback. Messi, the tournament’s leading scorer with eight goals, provided assists for Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez to seal the victory and send Argentina to the final. Messi recently broke the all-time World Cup scoring record with 17 goals during Argentina’s group stage victory over Austria.

Tensions flared again after the final whistle, when Bellingham slapped Argentine substitute Valentin Barco, who had run onto the pitch to celebrate. Teammates were required to restrain Bellingham during the post-match celebrations. The incident has placed the England midfielder under scrutiny from FIFA’s disciplinary committee.

Bellingham faces potential disciplinary action for violent conduct, which could result in a suspension for the bronze-medal match against France in Miami. However, reports suggest the disciplinary committee may view the post-match action as an act of petulance rather than violence, potentially sparing him from a ban for the upcoming fixture.
