Belichick ranked 63rd in CBS Sports annual college football coach poll
The sports media outlet’s latest newsletter highlights significant shifts in MLB, WNBA, and boxing standings alongside its traditional summer coach rankings.
CBS Sports has published its annual rankings of Power Four college football coaches, placing former NFL head coach Bill Belichick at number 63. The publication, which serves as an adaptation of the CBS Sports HQ AM Newsletter, noted that Belichick received last-place votes from three of the outlet’s writers, marking him as the only individual not named Tavita Pritchard to receive such votes.
The placement of Belichick, who is currently the head coach at North Carolina, sparked debate within the newsroom. The newsletter described the former Patriots coach as a polarizing figure among the experts, with some writers expressing confusion over his inclusion in the lower tiers of the poll. The rankings are a summer tradition for the outlet, with experts filling out ballots to rank every coach in the Power Four conferences.
Beyond college football, the newsletter detailed significant movements in other major sports rankings. In Major League Baseball, the Chicago Cubs have lost ten consecutive games, dropping them eleven spots in the rankings to number 15. This current slump contrasts with earlier in the year, when the team recorded two separate ten-game winning streaks.
In the Women’s National Basketball Association, the New York Liberty fell to number 8 after suffering three losses in a five-day span. The team had previously held the number 1 spot in the rankings. The newsletter noted that the drop occurred despite the season debuts of Satou Sabally and Sabrina Ionescu, with the Liberty now trailing the Atlanta Fire, who moved up six spots to number 7.
Professional boxing saw a shift in the pound-for-pound rankings following a heavyweight bout between Oleksandr Usyk and Rico Verhoeven. Usyk secured a narrow victory, avoiding what would have been the first defeat of his career. The result caused Usyk to drop two places in the rankings to number 4, behind David Benavidez, who moved up one spot.
The publication also outlined a schedule of upcoming sporting events, including the second round of the French Open, various MLB fixtures, and the UEFA Conference League final between Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano. Additional matches listed included NBA games featuring the Phoenix Mercury against the New York Liberty and the Atlanta Dream against the Minnesota Lynx.
