The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has moved to quell growing speculation surrounding captain Rohit Sharma’s future, insisting the veteran opener remains a central figure in the national team’s strategy for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The clarification comes as India prepares to announce its squad for the three-match One Day International series against the West Indies, scheduled for late September 2026.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia firmly rejected reports suggesting Sharma had been excluded from World Cup plans or that retirement discussions were underway. Saikia stated that the former captain remains firmly within the team’s scheme of things, provided he continues to meet performance standards. The comments serve to counter narratives that emerged following a challenging tour of the United Kingdom, where Sharma faced scrutiny over his form and fitness levels at age 40.
Sharma’s selection prospects for the West Indies series have been significantly reinforced by his recent performance against England. In the third ODI at Lord’s, he scored 138 runs, ending a prolonged century drought and demonstrating his continued capability as a premier 50-over batter. This innings has complicated any potential immediate transition away from one of India’s most successful ODI captains, adding weight to his case for retention in the upcoming squad.
