BBC Sport predicts Arsenal to defend Premier League title in 2026-27
Twenty-six BBC Sport pundits and algorithmic models have identified Arsenal as the overwhelming favourites to retain the Premier League crown, with Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool rounding out the projected top four.
BBC Sport has released its predictions for the 2026-27 Premier League season, surveying 26 pundits alongside AI tools and Opta’s supercomputer. The consensus places Arsenal as the clear favourites to defend their title, following their victory in the 2025-26 season which ended a 22-year wait for the club.
The predictions, based on squad compositions as of 20 August, indicate that 89 per cent of human predictors selected Arsenal as champions. No predictor placed the Gunners lower than second in the final table. This confidence is underpinned by managerial continuity under Mikel Arteta and recent squad reinforcements, including the signing of Bruno Guimaraes.
Manchester City, who lost key players such as Rodri, John Stones and Bernardo Silva, face a transitional period under new manager Enzo Maresca. While the majority of pundits predict City will finish in the top four, only 12 per cent expect them to reclaim the title. The departure of Pep Guardiola marks a significant shift for the club, which finished seven points behind Arsenal last season.
Chelsea are featured in 21 of the 28 top-four predictions, with five pundits backing them as runners-up. The appointment of Xabi Alonso as manager, combined with the absence of European competition, is seen as a stabilising factor for the squad. Liverpool, under new manager Andoni Iraola, are included in only four predictions as finishing higher than third, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding their adaptation to a new tactical approach.
The AI prediction, generated using Microsoft Copilot Chat, and Opta’s supercomputer, which simulated 380 games 10,000 times, aligned with the human consensus on the top four clubs. The models and pundits largely agreed that the current squad structures favour Arsenal, despite the remaining 13 days until the transfer window closes on 23:00 BST on 2 September.
The overall expected ranking, calculated using a weighted point system across all 28 predictions, confirms Arsenal’s status as the team to beat. The analysis highlights the impact of managerial changes and squad transfers on the competitive landscape, with continuity identified as a key advantage for the reigning champions.
