Barcelona sign Gordon in £69m-plus deal from Newcastle
La Liga champions finalise signing of England forward ahead of World Cup

Barcelona have officially signed England forward Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in a transaction valued at more than £69.3m, exceeding €80m. The 25-year-old has agreed to a contract with the La Liga champions that runs until 2031, concluding a period of advanced talks between the two clubs. The move follows reported interest from Bayern Munich, with an agreement reached between the parties earlier this week.

Gordon underwent a medical in Barcelona on Thursday and was scheduled for an official unveiling at the Camp Nou on Friday. However, the presentation was delayed by nearly eight hours due to paperwork issues, despite the player having completed his personal obligations. Speaking at the event, Gordon expressed excitement about the move, noting that he had been learning Spanish since joining Newcastle, inspired by a club physiotherapist and a childhood dream of playing for the Spanish giants.

The transfer marks the end of a three-and-a-half-year stint for Gordon at Newcastle United, where he made 152 appearances and scored 17 goals in all competitions this season. He leaves the club as their top scorer, having been left on the bench for the final four Premier League games of the campaign under head coach Eddie Howe. Howe stated that while the club was disappointed to lose the forward, they understood the significance of the opportunity for his career and wished him success at the upcoming World Cup.

Newcastle United are expected to utilise the substantial transfer fee to fund an extensive rebuild. The club, which appointed sporting director Ross Wilson and chief executive David Hopkinson earlier this season, is reportedly targeting reinforcements across multiple positions, including a goalkeeper, full-back, midfielder, and several forwards. This sale represents Newcastle’s second-biggest transfer fee, providing the financial impetus for their strategic reinvestment following a 12th-placed finish in the previous Premier League season.

Everton will receive 15 per cent of the profit Newcastle make on the sale, a clause included in the original terms when Gordon moved from Goodison Park to St James' Park in January 2023. Gordon is now set to join the England squad for a training camp in the United States before the World Cup begins on 11 June. He will join compatriot Marcus Rashford at Barcelona, although the Spanish club has yet to trigger an option to make Rashford’s loan move permanent.
