Barcelona leadership signals interest in Fabregas as Flick successor
Reports from Catalunya Radio suggest Cesc Fabregas is best placed to replace Hansi Flick, despite the current coach’s contract extension until 2028.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco have reportedly conveyed interest in appointing Cesc Fabregas as the club’s future head coach, positioning the former midfielder as the ideal successor to Hansi Flick. According to Catalunya Radio, Fabregas is currently viewed as “best placed” to take over the first-team role, a status bolstered by his recent success in managing Como in Serie A.
The speculation arises against the backdrop of Flick’s current tenure, which remains secure for the foreseeable future. The German coach signed a contract extension at the end of the season that runs until 2028, with an option for a further year. Flick, 61, has previously indicated that Barcelona will be his final coaching role before retirement, yet the club’s leadership appears to be planning for the eventual transition.
Fabregas, 37, has established a strong reputation in Italy, where he secured Como’s first-ever qualification for the Champions League this season. His achievements have not gone unnoticed back in Catalunya, with the club’s hierarchy maintaining a good relationship with the coach. Laporta and Deco are understood to have already communicated the possibility of a future coaching position at the club to Fabregas.
Despite the interest from Barcelona, Fabregas has emphasised a measured approach to his career progression. When quizzed on his future at the end of the season, he stated he was in no rush to leave Como, noting that patience and continuous learning are essential in his development. He acknowledged that the time may eventually come to take the next step when he feels ready, while highlighting Como’s historic achievement as a priority.
The situation highlights the complex governance of Barcelona’s coaching strategy, balancing immediate stability under Flick with long-term succession planning. While no formal offer has been made and Flick’s departure timeline remains unclear, the interest from the top brass signals a clear preference for Fabregas should the current era conclude.
