Barcelona and Lyonnes set for WSL final showdown in Oslo
European giants clash for fourth time in eight years as venue size sparks debate ahead of Saturday’s match.

Barcelona and OL Lyonnes are scheduled to contest the Women’s Champions League final in Oslo on Saturday, with both clubs targeting a season sweep of four major trophies. This fixture marks the fourth meeting between the two dominant European sides in the past eight finals, with Lyon holding a 2-1 head-to-head advantage in these specific encounters. Barcelona enters the match as the favourite, aiming for their fourth title after reaching seven finals in eight years, while Lyon seeks to extend their record eight European titles.
The choice of the 28,000-seat Ullevaal Stadium has sparked debate regarding the event's scale. Barcelona star Aitana Bonmatí described the venue as “a step back” due to its size and limited direct flight connectivity. However, UEFA and players such as Nadine Kessler, Caroline Graham Hansen, and Ada Hegerberg have defended the location, highlighting its significance to Norwegian women’s football and the stadium’s sold-out status.
Lyon captain Wendie Renard is set to play in her 12th final, having scored in the club’s first title win in 2011. Barcelona’s two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alèxia Putellas acknowledged Lyon’s superiority in their 2019 final encounter, describing the 4-1 loss as “humbling.” Lyon also won their title clash in 2022, and only in 2024 did Barcelona finally triumph against its biggest rival.
The coaching dynamic adds another layer to the contest, as Lyon’s Jonatan Giráldez previously won two Women’s Champions League titles at Barcelona when Pere Romeu was one of his assistants. Giráldez stated he feels privileged to face Barcelona, expressing gratitude for his past experience there.
The 2027 final is scheduled to take place at Poland’s national stadium in Warsaw, which has a capacity of 56,000. This follows last year’s final in Lisbon, where a smaller crowd attended the match that saw Arsenal defeat Barcelona 1-0.
