German-American defender Noahkai Banks has elected to represent Germany in future international football, a decision that resolves his dual-citizenship status. The 19-year-old central defender was named to the Germany Under-21 squad on Friday, marking a formal shift in his international allegiance.
The selection was confirmed by Germany Under-21 coach Antonio Di Salvo, who stated that Banks and attacking midfielder Louey Ben Farhat had "chosen to represent Germany." Both players were included in the squad announcement, signalling the federation’s success in securing their commitments.
Banks, who was born in Hawaii and raised in Germany, currently plays in the Bundesliga for Augsburg. His previous international exposure came through the United States men’s national team, which called him up last year. However, he remained an unused substitute during a friendly loss to Japan in October, a period that may have influenced his final decision.
Di Salvo indicated that the coaching staff had been in contact with both players for some time, focusing their recruitment efforts on them. "I’m very pleased that we have been able to lay out a future pathway with Germany for them and that they agreed with it," Di Salvo said.
The inclusion of Banks and Ben Farhat, who previously played two friendlies for Tunisia, adds depth to the squad as it prepares for upcoming fixtures. The Germany Under-21 team is scheduled to begin European under-21 championship qualifiers against Latvia, Malta, and Georgia starting next week.
