Baldwyn Bearcats dismiss senior defensive lineman following felony charges

The Baldwyn Bearcats have dismissed senior defensive lineman Braxton Stewart from their football squad following a felony arrest, a decision that underscores the governance challenges facing the programme ahead of its upcoming season. Stewart, 19, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after an altercation with a group of juveniles.

According to the Baldwyn Police Department, the incident began on Second Street before Stewart was arrested on Cemetery Street. Police reported that Stewart allegedly struck one of the juveniles with a handgun, though no shots were fired. He was booked into the Lee County-Tupelo Adult Jail on 17 August 2026 and bonded out the following day. The case is currently scheduled to be presented to a grand jury.

The dismissal represents a notable setback for the Bearcats, who are already navigating roster changes. Stewart’s departure is the second significant personnel loss for the team this off-season, following the summer transfer of cornerback and wide receiver Ashton Grice to Tupelo Christian. These moves have altered the defensive and offensive balance of the squad entering the 2026 campaign.

Stewart was considered one of the Bearcats’ most productive players in the previous season. Standing six feet tall and weighing 205 pounds, he recorded 59 tackles, eight sacks, and 14 tackles-for-loss. He also led the team with 13 quarterback hurries, demonstrating a significant impact on the defensive line.

His contribution to the programme dates back to his sophomore year, when he played a pivotal role in Baldwyn’s run to the Class 1A state championship. During that season, Stewart posted 84 tackles, three sacks, 18 tackles-for-loss, and five fumble recoveries, establishing himself as a key figure in the team’s success.

With the roster in flux, the Bearcats are scheduled to open the 2026 season at home against Kossuth on Thursday. The dismissal of Stewart highlights the intersection of individual conduct and institutional policy in high school athletics, particularly when key players are involved in legal proceedings that remain pending.
