Former Chelsea captain confirms end of 20-year career

Chelsea legend Cesar Azpilicueta has confirmed his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a distinguished 20-year career. The 36-year-old Spanish international announced the decision via a post on X, marking the conclusion of a tenure that saw him become a defining figure at Stamford Bridge.

Azpilicueta joined Chelsea in 2012, establishing himself as a stalwart for 11 years. During his time in London, he made 508 appearances, securing two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup, and two Europa League trophies. He is perhaps best remembered for captaining the side to their 2021 Champions League triumph, a feat that cemented his status among the club’s supporters.

His professional journey began at Osasuna in 2006, followed by a spell at Marseille where he won two French League Cups and a French Super Cup. After his departure from Chelsea, Azpilicueta spent two seasons at Atletico Madrid before joining Sevilla last summer, where he made 16 La Liga appearances in his final term. He also earned 44 caps for the Spanish national team.

In his retirement statement, Azpilicueta reflected on his origins in Pamplona and the breadth of his career. He expressed gratitude for the opportunities provided by Osasuna, Marseille, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, and Sevilla, noting that representing his country at major tournaments had been a "true privilege." He acknowledged the role of teammates, coaches, and staff in his development over two decades.

Azpilicueta will immediately transition into a media role, having been named as a BBC pundit for the upcoming World Cup. He will join former Chelsea teammate Olivier Giroud on the broadcast panel, with the source indicating he will return to UK television screens in just a matter of weeks.
