Automakers phase out cloud-based vehicle connectivity services

As 3G networks shutter and backend costs rise, brands including Lexus, Acura, and BMW are ending support for older models, raising concerns about obsolescence as internet-connected vehicles approach 95 per cent of new sales by 2030.

Legacy telematics hardware and cellular network upgrades are forcing manufacturers to discontinue connected services, leaving many owners with permanent loss of remote features.

Automakers are systematically discontinuing cloud-based connected vehicle services as older telematics hardware becomes obsolete and global cellular networks undergo major upgrades. The shutdown of 3G networks in the United States in 2022 served as a primary catalyst, triggering the loss of connectivity for vehicles relying on that technology. This shift has affected major brands including Lexus, Acura, and BMW, with many owners facing the permanent loss of remote features such as emergency calling and remote locking.

The transition away from legacy systems has varied in severity across the industry. Lexus owners of 2010–2017 models saw Enform connectivity go dark overnight when 3G ceased, with the company offering prorated refunds but no retrofit path. Similarly, BMW ended ConnectedDrive services for 3G-equipped vehicles in early 2022, with some owners facing upgrade costs exceeding $1,400 for 4G telematics units. In 2023, Acura announced it would stop supporting the older AcuraLink stack for 2014–2022 models, citing backend costs rather than hardware obsolescence, even for vehicles equipped with functional 4G hardware.

While manufacturers have offered software updates or hardware replacements for some models, mitigation strategies remain inconsistent. Owners may utilise software OTA updates, hardware replacements such as Subaru’s Starlink DCM, aftermarket OBD devices, or rely on smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. These alternatives provide varying levels of functionality, with smartphone integration often serving as the most reliable bridge for safety features like crash detection when OEM systems fail.

Despite the loss of cloud services, the vehicle’s mechanical operation, powertrain, and climate control remain unaffected. However, the broader industry trajectory suggests increasing reliance on these digital features. Industry experts predict that 90–95 per cent of new vehicles will be internet-connected by 2030, raising concerns about widespread future obsolescence without modular hardware solutions that allow for easier upgrades.

The current landscape highlights a growing disconnect between vehicle longevity and software support cycles. As automakers prioritise cost efficiencies and newer technologies, older connected stacks are increasingly viewed as liabilities. This trend underscores the need for more sustainable hardware architectures, as the majority of vehicles on the road today rely on embedded modem-based hardware that will eventually face similar sunset events.
