Audi Sport’s 2027 RS5: A PHEV with a Dual Identity
Developed in Saalfelden, Austria, the 2027 RS5 combines a 630-horsepower V6 hybrid system with an innovative electric rear differential, offering both all-weather stability and track-focused agility ahead of its US launch.

Audi Sport has unveiled the 2027 RS5, a plug-in hybrid performance vehicle developed at its facility in Saalfelden, Austria. The model marks a significant technical shift for the brand’s motorsports division, which also develops Formula 1 power units. The RS5 utilises a shared chassis with the standard A5 but features RS-specific bodywork, including wheel arch blisters 90 millimetres wider than the base model and distinctive OLED tail lights with a checkered flag pattern.
Under the aluminium and carbon-fibre bodywork lies an entirely new 2.9-litre turbocharged V6 engine. Operating on a modified Miller cycle with a hot-vee configuration, the internal combustion engine generates 502 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque. This represents a 60-horsepower increase over the previous generation while consuming approximately 20 percent less fuel. The engine is paired with an electric motor producing 174 horsepower and 470 Nm, delivering a combined output of 630 horsepower and 825 Nm of torque.
A key innovation in the RS5 is the new Dynamic Torque Control rear differential. Replacing hydraulic clutches with an 8 kW, 40 Nm electric motor and planetary gears, the system can react in just 15 milliseconds. It allows for a torque split of up to 1,475 lb-ft across the axle, enabling the vehicle to remain neutral or induce oversteer depending on the selected drive mode. The powertrain is managed by an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive with a limited-slip centre differential.
The vehicle is equipped with a 22 kWh net lithium-ion battery, providing an electric-only range of approximately 80 km. While it lacks DC charging capability, it accepts AC power at up to 11 kW, requiring 2.5 hours to recharge. During testing in Saalfelden, the car demonstrated exceptional stability in adverse weather conditions, including rain and snow, despite being fitted with summer tyres. The 2,350 kg curb weight is managed by twin-valve dampers that control ride quality even in dynamic settings.
On track, the RS5 exhibits a markedly different character. In RS Sport mode with stability control reduced, the vehicle displays a playful, oversteer-capable nature, allowing drivers to slide the rear axle with throttle input. Audi of America plans to begin US sales next year, with a base price estimated at $100,000. The RS5 Avant station wagon is not currently planned for the US market, though Audi officials noted that dealer pressure previously influenced the decision to import the RS6 Avant.
