Former Ohio State assistant takes over program with 5-7 record from 2025

Auburn University has appointed Alex Golesh as its new head football coach, officially replacing Hugh Freeze. The announcement marks the beginning of a new administrative chapter for the program, which concluded the 2025 season with a 5-7 overall record and a 1-7 mark in the Southeastern Conference. Golesh, who previously held coaching positions at Ohio State, was photographed at the SEC Football Media Day in Tampa, Florida, on July 21, 2026, signalling the start of his tenure.

Golesh’s background presents a distinct profile for the role. Born in the USSR, he moved to the United States at the age of seven. Notably, he never played college football, competing only at the high school level before transitioning into coaching as an undergraduate at Ohio State. He assumes the head coaching position from Hugh Freeze, who was dismissed late in the 2025 season. Freeze, like Golesh, did not play college football during his own playing career.

The appointment follows a prolonged period of instability and underperformance for Auburn. Since the dismissal of Gus Malzahn after the 2020 season, the Tigers have recorded a string of identical losing seasons, finishing with records of 6-7, 5-7, 6-7, 5-7, and 5-7. Malzahn was followed by Bryan Harsin, who served for two seasons before being fired, and subsequently Freeze, whose tenure was characterised by offensive struggles and a notable loss in the 2023 Iron Bowl.

The program faces immediate challenges within a competitive conference landscape. Auburn shares a historical rivalry with Georgia, a team that currently leads the all-time series 66-56-8. While Auburn secured a significant victory against an undefeated Georgia team in 2017, the broader trend has seen the Tigers struggle to maintain consistency against their conference rivals. The new coaching staff must address these structural issues to reverse the recent trajectory.

Auburn University continues to be a notable institution beyond its athletic achievements, with a list of distinguished alumni that includes Olympic swimmer Suni Lee, actor Octavia Spencer, basketball legend Charles Barkley, and Apple CEO Tim Cook. Other notable graduates include MLB players Frank Thomas, Josh Donaldson, and Tim Hudson, as well as musician Bo Jackson. As Golesh begins his work on the Plains, the focus remains on stabilising the programme after years of administrative turnover and on-field inconsistency.
