Oakland’s J.T. Ginn sees no-no and lead vanish in four-pitch span against Angels

Oakland Athletics pitcher J.T. Ginn saw his no-hitter and a 1-0 lead disappear in a span of just four pitches during the ninth inning of Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels. The loss ended a significant drought in Major League Baseball, as no no-hitter had been recorded since September 2024.

Ginn held a 1-0 lead entering the ninth inning, a margin secured by a small rally that set the stage for his performance. However, the frame began with Adam Frazier singling to start the inning for the Angels. Three pitches later, Zach Neto hit a walk-off home run to center field, sealing the victory for Los Angeles and ending Ginn’s bid for history.

Despite the outcome, Ginn dominated through eight innings, striking out 10 batters while issuing only one walk. He did not allow hard contact until the eighth inning, when Jo Adell lined out to centre. The performance was particularly notable given Ginn’s previous workload; he had only exceeded six innings in an outing once in his career prior to an eight-inning start on May 7 of this season.

Had Ginn completed the no-hitter, it would have been the 14th in Oakland Athletics franchise history. The most recent no-hitter by an Oakland pitcher was thrown by Mike Fiers against the Cincinnati Reds on May 7, 2019. The last individual no-hitter in MLB was recorded by Blake Snell against the Reds on August 2, 2024, while the most recent combined no-hitter occurred in September 2024 when the Cubs faced the Pirates.

The defeat moved the Athletics to a 23-24 record, maintaining their first-place position in the AL West. The Angels fell to 17-31, extending a streak that dates back to 1999, when they were last no-hit by Eric Milton of the Minnesota Twins.
