Athletics’ Langeliers sidelined with torn meniscus, trade hopes dashed

Oakland Athletics All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers is expected to miss the remainder of the 2026 Major League Baseball season after sustaining a torn meniscus in his right knee. The 28-year-old suffered the injury on the basepaths and is anticipated to undergo surgery to repair the tear, a move that would sideline him through the end of the year.
The development effectively terminates any potential trade interest in Langeliers ahead of the August 3 deadline. While the Athletics had not planned to move the player, multiple clubs had hoped their stance would soften as the deadline approached. However, injured players are rarely traded at full value, and sources indicate that trade talks are now certain to end. Langeliers remains under team control through 2028.
Langeliers has been the heartbeat of the Athletics’ roster, serving as the team’s leading performer despite a difficult season. In 93 games, he has hit .263/.332/.497 with 23 home runs and 51 RBIs. He was on pace to become just the third catcher in major league history to record three consecutive seasons of at least 29 home runs, a feat bolstered by his elite power and defensive capabilities, including catching 11 runners out of 35 stolen-base attempts this season.
The injury compounds a challenging period for the Athletics, who currently hold a 44-60 record and an MLB-worst minus-122 run differential. The team has been hampered by a pitching staff with a 5.37 ERA and significant offensive losses, including season-ending knee surgery for slugger Brent Rooker and injuries to Nick Kurtz and Jacob Wilson.
Backup catcher Jonah Heim will assume full-time duties for the remainder of the season. A former All-Star, Heim has performed well in Langeliers’ absence and was previously viewed as a potential trade candidate. Langeliers, originally drafted by the Athletics with the ninth pick in 2019 out of Baylor, was acquired from the Atlanta Braves in the Matt Olson trade in 2022 and has since established himself as one of the most productive players in his draft class.
