Asus just announced the OLED Xbox Ally X of my dreams
Special-edition handheld features upgraded screen and refined controls but is only available with Xreal R1 glasses

Asus has announced the ROG Xbox Ally X20, a special-edition handheld gaming device that introduces a 7.4-inch 120Hz OLED display to the Xbox Ally lineup. The new screen replaces the original model’s 7-inch IPS panel and offers 600-nit SDR brightness with HDR peaks of 1,400 nits. The device holds VESA DisplayHDR TrueBlack 1000 certification and supports Dolby Vision, alongside an improved variable refresh rate that extends down to 30Hz.

Internally, the X20 utilises the same AMD Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of 8000MT/sec RAM, and 1TB of storage found in the standard Xbox Ally X. To accommodate the larger display and revised internal layout, the chassis is 9mm wider, 0.5mm thicker, and 41g heavier than its predecessor. Asus has also redesigned the cooling fans to improve airflow and reduce touchscreen temperatures, while adding a faster microSD Express card slot.

Hardware refinements address specific user feedback regarding the original device. The controversial "Library" button has been removed and replaced with an "Action" button, which captures screenshots or recordings depending on press duration. The ABXY buttons are now flush with the casing, bumper switches have been relocated for a quieter throw, and the joysticks have been upgraded to drift-resistant GuliKit TMR models. The D-pad also features a rotating mechanism to switch between 8-way and 4-way input.

Despite the hardware upgrades, the ROG Xbox Ally X20 will not be available for standalone purchase. Asus confirmed the device is exclusively bundled with the Xreal R1 mixed-reality glasses, which retail for approximately $849. The combined bundle price has not yet been disclosed, though Asus spokesperson Anthony Spence indicated the strategy may help offset the high cost of the handheld rather than discount the glasses.

Spence confirmed there are no current plans to increase the price of the original Xbox Ally X, which remains available at $1,000. He noted that Asus is still considering whether to offer a software solution to remap the "Library" button on the existing model, responding to ongoing user requests for greater control over the interface.
