Astros part ways with GM Dana Brown despite AL West lead

The Houston Astros and general manager Dana Brown have mutually agreed to part ways, a move announced on Monday while the club holds a tie for first place in the American League West. The decision follows a 3-6 homestand that concluded with a series loss to the Athletics, leaving the team at a 65-66 record.

Although the timing of the departure is notable given the team’s current standing, the Astros remain a sub-.500 side. They are currently level with the Texas Rangers for the division lead and the Cleveland Guardians for a wild-card spot. This position represents a significant recovery from earlier in the season, when injuries saw the team sit 11 games under .500 on 20 May.

Since that low point, Houston has improved to a 45-35 record. Brown, who assumed the general manager role in January 2023, had previously served as vice president of scouting for the Atlanta Braves. He replaced James Click, who departed the organisation shortly after the 2022 World Series victory.

Owner Jim Crane stated that Brown helped the organisation win two division titles and led key scouting, draft, and development efforts. “On behalf of the Astros, I want to thank him for his commitment, energy, and contributions to our organisation,” Crane said. “We wish he and his family the best.”

Brown acknowledged the opportunity to serve in his first role as an MLB general manager. “The Astros organisation and the fans have welcomed me and my family, and I am grateful to have called Houston home for the past four seasons,” Brown said. “I wish the organisation well and I look forward to the future as I continue my 36-plus years in professional baseball.”

During the transition period, senior adviser Jeff Bagwell and assistant general managers Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey, and Connor Huff will assume Brown’s responsibilities. Jim Crane will oversee baseball operations while the club considers its next steps for the vacant position.
