Aston Villa open talks for Club Brugge defender Joel Ordonez

Aston Villa have initiated negotiations with Club Brugge to secure the services of 22-year-old centre-back Joel Ordonez. According to The Athletic, the move is intended to address a specific defensive gap at Villa Park, with the club viewing the Ecuadorian international as a primary option to replace Ezri Konsa this summer.
The approach for Ordonez follows the rejection of an earlier bid by Southampton for Taylor Harwood-Bellis. Villa had offered £18 million plus add-ons for the defender, but the Saints turned down the proposal. While the club remains in talks with Southampton regarding Harwood-Bellis, the pursuit of Ordonez signals a parallel strategy to ensure at least one new centre-back is signed.
Ordonez has been linked with several Premier League clubs in recent transfer windows, but Villa are currently leading the race. The club is expected to pay a fee significantly higher than the £18 million offered for Harwood-Bellis to secure the defender's signature. This financial commitment reflects the club's intent to sign a younger player with clear room for development to succeed Konsa.
The 22-year-old has earned 20 caps for Ecuador, including three appearances at the 2026 World Cup. His international experience is complemented by a strong record in European competition. In the previous Champions League season, Ordonez made 10 appearances, completing 94 per cent of his passes and recording 53 clearances.
His defensive output in domestic league play was equally consistent last season. Ordonez averaged 4.15 clearances and 1.48 tackles per game, while also averaging approximately one foul per match. These statistics suggest a player capable of performing at a high level without overstepping the mark, a quality Villa will likely assess as the negotiations progress.
The transfer remains in the early stages, with no final fee confirmed. However, the club's dual-track approach indicates a determination to bolster its defensive line before the window closes, prioritising long-term potential over immediate short-term fixes.
