Arsenal’s title-winning recruitment drive leaves attacking gap
BBC Sport reports Arsenal began the summer with a shortlist of more than 20 players but finished without several priority attacking targets.
Arsenal entered the summer transfer window as Premier League champions with an ambitious plan to strengthen their squad. BBC Sport reports that more than 20 players were considered, as manager Mikel Arteta, sporting director Andrea Berta and Kroenke Sports & Entertainment sought to build on the club’s title success.
The club secured Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United for £75 million, Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for £51m plus £4m in add-ons, and Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for about £35m. Arsenal also made Piero Hincapie’s loan move permanent and signed goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer.
Those additions addressed midfield, defence and some attacking depth, but Arsenal did not land Morgan Rogers, Vinicius Jr or Julian Alvarez. Rogers ultimately joined Chelsea, while Vinicius extended his contract with Real Madrid and Alvarez remained at Atletico Madrid, according to BBC Sport’s account.
The unresolved attacking recruitment carries added significance after the departures of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard. Martinelli moved to Al-Hilal for a reported £60m, while Arsenal’s player sales generated about £114m overall. Ethan Nwaneri joined Borussia Dortmund on a season-long loan with a January recall option.
Arsenal have spent nearly £450m over 12 months and are seeking greater sustainability while remaining compliant with domestic and European financial regulations. The summer’s decisions therefore leave the club balancing proven experience and immediate quality against squad age, future trading and the absence of a recognised top-level forward.
