Arsenal win exposes Chelsea’s midfield questions after £349m summer
Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat at Emirates Stadium ended with right-backs Reece James and Malo Gusto operating in midfield, renewing scrutiny of the club’s squad planning.
Arsenal came from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1 at Emirates Stadium, extending the focus on Chelsea’s midfield options after a summer in which BBC Sport reported the club spent £349m.
Chelsea took the lead through Morgan Rogers after 77 seconds, but Kai Havertz equalised in the first half before Martin Odegaard scored Arsenal’s winner in the 50th minute.
The final stages left Chelsea with James and Gusto alongside each other in midfield. Both began their careers as right-backs, although James has been used in midfield by manager Xabi Alonso this season.
BBC Sport identified the absence of Moises Caicedo as a central issue. Caicedo has an unspecified injury and no confirmed return date, while Jordan Henderson remains sidelined with a broken arm. Chelsea also sold Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City for a reported joint British-record £125m without signing a direct replacement.
Chelsea’s attempts to add another central midfielder also failed. Monaco ended a reported £47m move for Lamine Camara, while earlier bids of up to £64m for Alex Scott were rejected and a move for Manu Kone was blocked.
The defeat came after Chelsea recruited 10 first-team players during the summer and began the season without European football. But after conceding seven goals in three league matches, and with a reported 33-point gap to Arsenal following last season’s 10th-place finish, the club’s decision not to replace Fernandez remains under scrutiny.
