Arizona Wildcats duo selected for American Samoa Olympic bid squad
Tele Jennings and Sina Talataina join roster for Canada Cup, marking territory’s first international appearance since targeting 2028 Los Angeles Games.

The American Samoa Softball Association has confirmed the national team roster for the upcoming Canada Cup tournament, naming University of Arizona Wildcats Tele Jennings and Sina Talataina to the squad. The selection underscores the territory’s renewed commitment to international competition, serving as its first tournament since announcing a bid to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The team will compete in Surrey, British Columbia, from July 6 to 12.
Both players qualified for the roster based on heritage, a pathway available to residents of the territory who hold US passports but are not considered US citizens unless naturalised. This arrangement allows athletes residing in the United States to represent American Samoa on the international stage, a precedent set by several former Wildcats who have previously competed for nations including Mexico and the Philippines.
Jennings enters the international tournament following a breakout season at Arizona after transferring from San Diego. Initially utilising a reserve role, she assumed the position of primary designated player following an injury to Anyssa Wild. Jennings responded with a .271 batting average and an on-base plus slugging (OPS) figure of .803 during conference play, earning All-Big 12 Second Team honours.
Talataina has featured prominently in the Wildcats’ lineup this season, starting as the team’s first baseman. She appeared in 16 games, recording five starts at first base and four appearances at designated player. Her inclusion in the national squad highlights the depth of talent Arizona has contributed to the territory’s Olympic aspirations.
The national team is led by Samantha Ricketts, the head coach of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, who recently guided her program to its first Women’s College World Series appearance. The coaching staff’s experience at the collegiate elite level provides a structural foundation for the territory’s developmental goals.
Jennings will continue her summer campaign with the Madison Night Mares in the Northwoods Softball League, a team that secured the NWL championship in 2025. Former Wildcat Emma Kavanagh, who contributed to that championship run, will also join the Night Mares for the upcoming season, further linking collegiate performance with the players’ international eligibility.
