Aptoide becomes first third-party store to launch on US Google Play
The move simplifies access for US users and signals a shift in Google’s regulatory landscape, with other major players expected to follow.

Aptoide has launched as the first third-party Android app store available directly within Google’s Play Store in the United States. The mobile game-focused digital store is now discoverable and downloadable through Google’s official storefront, marking a significant departure from previous access methods that required users to sideload applications or rely on pre-installed software on specific devices.
The integration is a direct consequence of the legal dispute between Google and Epic Games. A 2024 court ruling mandated that the Play Store open to rival storefronts. Although Google appealed the decision and subsequently entered into a joint proposal with Epic for a global solution, Judge James Donato expressed repeated skepticism regarding the agreement. The companies dropped the proposal last month, clearing the final regulatory hurdle for Aptoide’s entry.
While Aptoide is currently exclusive to the US market on the Play Store, it remains accessible via sideloading on Android devices globally. The company already operates an iOS app store in the European Union, Japan, and Brazil, following legislative changes that forced Apple to alter its policies in those regions.
This development precedes potential listings by other major entities, including Epic Games, Amazon, Samsung, and Microsoft. The launch opens the door for Microsoft’s long-gestating Xbox mobile store and allows other manufacturers to place their proprietary stores in front of potential customers directly within the Google ecosystem.
Outside the United States, Google continues to develop a global Registered App Store program. This ongoing initiative suggests that access methods for third-party stores may differ depending on the user’s location, with the US currently serving as the primary market for direct Play Store integration.
