Tech sector shifts as Apple prepares AI integration and gaming hardware faces cost pressures

Apple is preparing to unveil a significant restructuring of its Siri assistant at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2026, according to a report from Bloomberg. The overhaul introduces a Gemini-powered AI agent integrated into the iPhone’s Dynamic Island and a new “Search or Ask” interface accessible via a swipe down from the top centre. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman provided an early preview of the interface, noting that while the final public version may differ, the update aims to replace the existing Visual Intelligence feature with capabilities supporting Google reverse image search and third-party AI analysis.

The updated Siri will feature a dedicated app on the homescreen and will allow users to launch apps, start text messages, and manage calendar appointments through the new interface. Apple is reportedly considering options for users to access third-party AI services, including ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, through this framework. Additionally, new photo editing tools named “Reframe” and “Extend” will be added to the Photos app, allowing users to adjust image perspective and generate visual elements, features previously seen on Android devices.

In the wearable technology sector, Oura has released the Ring 5, a smart ring that is 40 per cent smaller than its predecessor. The device reduces signal pathways from 18 to 12 but features LEDs four times as powerful as the Ring 4, aiming for more accurate health readings. Oura states the Ring 5 offers roughly a week of battery life on a single charge, supported by a new charging case with a built-in battery lasting a month. The device is available for pre-order starting at $399.

A growing trend among iPhone users involves running local open-weight chatbots to bypass cloud-based subscription models. This approach offers a one-time purchase of at most $5, compared to monthly fees for services like ChatGPT Plus, which cost at least $20 per month. Beyond cost savings, local processing enhances privacy by keeping data on the device and removes the requirement for a constant internet connection, although these models may not match the power of their cloud counterparts.

Valve has announced price increases of up to 50 per cent for Steam Deck OLED models, citing rising component and logistical costs. The 512GB OLED model price has increased from $549 to $789, while the 1TB model has risen from $649 to $949. Valve stated that the hardware itself has not changed and that the adjustments reflect global logistical challenges and rising memory and storage costs, a move that may signal higher pricing for the upcoming Steam Machine.
