Apple has announced its M6 processor, launching first on the Mac Mini and marking a significant transition in its silicon roadmap. The new chip is built on a 2nm manufacturing process, moving away from the 3nm process used for the M3, M4, and M5 generations. This shift to a more advanced node is expected to drive much of the performance uplift in the new generation of devices.

The M6 features a new 12-core CPU configuration, comprising two super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores. It is paired with a 12-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Processing Unit. Apple claims the M6 delivers a 20 per cent increase in multithreaded performance and a 30 per cent boost in AI performance compared to the previous M5 chip. The company also asserts that the chip offers the world’s fastest single-threaded performance, a claim that awaits independent verification through hands-on testing.

Memory bandwidth has increased by 10 per cent over the M5, reaching up to 170GB/s. The base configuration for the new Mac Mini includes 16GB of RAM, with options to configure up to 32GB. These hardware improvements are designed to support Apple’s positioning of the Mac Mini as a machine for running local AI models efficiently, leveraging the unified design of its M-series silicon.

However, the performance gains come at a higher cost. Apple is passing along the costs of an AI-driven memory crisis to consumers, resulting in rising prices for the new Mac Mini models. The demand for memory has been driven by the popularity of running AI workloads on local hardware, a trend that has seen Apple ax the cheapest Mac Mini model in May 2026.

For existing users, the upgrade path is nuanced. While the M6 offers respectable gains over the M5, Apple suggests that most M5 users do not need to upgrade immediately. The M5 remains an extremely capable system, and the difference in day-to-day use is unlikely to be dramatic. For users on older M2 or M3 systems, particularly those with limited RAM, the move to newer silicon may be more compelling for demanding tasks like video editing and AI work.

The new M6 Mac Mini skips the standard M5 generation, offering configurations with either the new M6 chip or the M5 Pro, which is currently found in the MacBook Pro. This strategic move allows Apple to target different market segments while highlighting the efficiency of its latest 2nm architecture.
