Apple’s AirPods with cameras for AI are apparently close to production
New prototypes are being actively tested by Apple staff, marking a key step toward early mass production of the AI-enabled earbuds.

Apple is advancing its hardware strategy for artificial intelligence as testers actively utilise prototypes of new AirPods equipped with cameras. According to reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, these devices have reached the design validation test stage, positioning them one step prior to production validation and early mass production. The prototypes are currently being used by Apple staff to validate functionality before the final manufacturing phase begins.

The new earbuds will bear a resemblance to the AirPods Pro 3, which were released in September 2025, but will feature longer stems to accommodate the camera technology. A small LED indicator has also been integrated into the design to signal when visual data is being transmitted to the cloud. This hardware update marks a significant expansion of Apple's AI capabilities, aiming to compete with rivals such as Meta's smart glasses and potentially OpenAI's reported AI phone.

Functionally, the cameras on the new AirPods are not intended to capture photos or video. Instead, they will ingest low-resolution visual information to provide data to Siri for specific tasks. Users could query the assistant to identify ingredients for recipes or receive visual assistance for turn-by-turn navigation. This approach allows the device to act as an additional sensory input for the AI without the storage and processing demands of high-definition imaging.

The planned launch timeline has been adjusted from the original target of the first half of 2026. The delay is driven by the need to align the release with an upgraded version of Siri, which is currently on track for a September debut. Consequently, the new AirPods are expected to arrive in the market around the same time as the voice assistant update, ensuring the hardware and software are fully integrated upon release.

This move underscores Apple's broader push into AI-infused gadgets, with the company reportedly developing smart glasses and an AI pendant that could launch as early as early 2027. While the specific date for the September launch remains contingent on the final delivery of the Siri upgrade, the active use of prototypes indicates the project is moving steadily forward. All details regarding the product specifications and testing status are based on current reporting and have not been officially confirmed by Apple.
