Apple weighs AI server return with possible Nvidia technology tie-up
Apple may re-enter the server market with machines built around prospective M8 Ultra chips and Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion technology, according to The Information as reported by The Verge.
Apple is reportedly considering a return to the server market as demand for computing power from the artificial-intelligence industry grows.
The proposed machines could use two or four ARM-based M8 Ultra chips, depending on the model. They may also incorporate Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion technology, which links multiple chips so they can operate as one.
The reported product may not launch before 2029, and Apple has not confirmed the project, its specifications, name or timing. The plans could change or may not proceed.
Apple discontinued its Xserve server line in 2011 and has largely left enterprise hardware to other manufacturers since. Its Mac Mini and Mac Studio computers have reportedly attracted AI developers, contributing to shortages.
Apple has also recently used Nvidia chips for revamped Siri servers. A formal partnership between the companies has not been confirmed, and their relationship has historically been frosty.
