Apple Wallet expands digital driver’s licence access in selected US states

Apple Wallet supports digital driver’s licences for eligible users in selected US states, allowing them to verify their identity or age using an iPhone or Apple Watch. Engadget reported that the feature remains largely limited to the US, apart from My Number Cards in Japan.

Adding a licence requires users to scan both sides of the physical card, complete an identity check and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode. The relevant issuing authority must approve the digital licence before it can be used.

Apple says the digital licence is encrypted and stored on the user’s device. Users can review which information will be shared before presenting the ID, and data is released only after authentication. Apple also says neither it nor the issuing authority can see where or when the digital ID is shared.

The feature is not a universal replacement for a physical licence. Some businesses and venues, including bars and restaurants, accept digital IDs, but support remains limited and inconsistent.

North Carolina’s DMV plans to support digital IDs in Apple Wallet, as well as Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet, from early 2027. Utah may join the programme soon, according to reports cited by Engadget, although its participation has not been confirmed.
