Apple set to debut OLED iPad mini by October 2026, Bloomberg reports
The Cupertino-based technology giant is preparing to transition its smallest tablet to OLED technology, marking the first significant design overhaul since 2021.
Apple is expected to release an iPad mini equipped with an OLED display by October 2026, according to a report from Bloomberg. This upcoming hardware refresh marks a significant shift for the compact tablet, ending a period of design stasis that has persisted since the last major overhaul in 2021. While the 2024 iteration introduced a newer processor, the chassis and screen technology remained unchanged, leaving many consumers without a compelling reason to upgrade.
The transition to OLED is anticipated to provide a stronger incentive for buyers to replace older models. However, the report notes that component costs have soared recently, and Apple has implemented price increases across various devices. Consequently, the first OLED iPad mini is likely to carry a premium price tag, reflecting the higher manufacturing expenses associated with the new display technology.
The iPad mini update is part of a broader wave of hardware announcements expected this autumn. Bloomberg indicates that Apple will also debut a foldable iPhone as part of the iPhone 18 lineup within the next few months. Additionally, new models of the Apple Watch and Mac are said to be entering the market soon, suggesting a busy season for the company’s product releases.
Beyond the mini, the rest of the iPad portfolio is scheduled for updates in the first half of 2027. The entry-level iPad is expected to receive specification upgrades early next year, though it is likely to retain its current LCD screen and design. The next-generation iPad Air and iPad Pro are slated to debut in the spring of 2027, potentially alongside new Apple Pencil models.
While Apple plans to eventually bring OLED displays to the iPad Air, the base model is expected to stick with LCD technology for the foreseeable future.
