Apple seeds iOS 27 beta 2 with Siri integration and RCS messaging updates
The second beta of iOS 27 introduces "Write with Siri," enhanced RCS support, and fixes for macOS Golden Gate, signalling Apple’s continued refinement of its operating systems ahead of the fall release.
Apple has released the second beta of iOS 27 to developers, marking the next phase of preparation for the operating system’s scheduled autumn launch. The update builds upon the features initially presented during the WWDC 2026 keynote, with the company maintaining a holistic approach to feature integration across its ecosystem. The same new capabilities are present in the beta 2 versions of iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, which were also seeded to developers today.
A central addition to the update is "Write with Siri," a new interface that replaces the previous AI-powered Writing Tools. The feature appears as a large prompt above the keyboard before typing begins, designed to assist users with composition. If a user starts writing without invoking the tool, the prompt shrinks to display only the Siri icon. This shift indicates a move toward deeper integration of generative AI capabilities directly into the input experience on iPhone and iPad devices.
Siri performance has also received incremental improvements in this build. The update includes faster processing speeds and labels elements of the Expressive Voice preview as "coming soon," suggesting further refinements to the assistant’s vocal capabilities in subsequent releases. While the core changes are described as evolutionary rather than revolutionary, they represent a continued push to enhance the responsiveness and utility of Apple’s virtual assistant.
In the messaging space, the beta introduces significant updates to RCS communications within the Messages app. The latest version adds support for message reactions and in-line replies for RCS, continuing a trend of increased synergy and security between Apple and non-Apple device texts. These enhancements align with broader industry moves to standardise rich messaging protocols, allowing for a more consistent experience across different platforms.
Beyond AI and messaging, the beta addresses technical issues reported in earlier builds. Problems with iPhone Mirroring in macOS Golden Gate have been resolved, improving the stability of the feature that allows users to control their iPhone from a Mac. Additionally, the update enables firmware updates for AirPods Max 2, ensuring that audio hardware remains compatible with the latest software changes. As testers continue to evaluate the build, further details are expected to emerge before the official launch window closes.
