Tech giant publishes new advertising rules for Maps platform, excluding plumbing and HVAC firms

Apple has published new advertising guidelines for its upcoming Apple Maps ad platform, explicitly banning content that promotes home services. The restrictions cover a range of trades including plumbing, electrical work, locksmiths, HVAC, pest control, roofing, and general contracting. The company, which plans to launch ads in the US and Canada this summer, aims to reserve ad space for local businesses, landmarks, and points of interest to maintain a user experience focused on discovery.

This approach distinguishes Apple Maps from competitors like Google Maps, where such ads are common. The guidelines also prohibit ads for bail bonds and cryptocurrency ATMs, alongside standard restrictions on deceptive, political, and illegal content. Apple describes the service as being for discovery as much as navigation, suggesting a strategic effort to cultivate a different experience compared to rival platforms.

The company announced plans to introduce ads to its maps app in March 2026, but has not shared an exact timeline for the launch beyond the summer window in the US and Canada. The new rules mirror Apple's App Review guidelines, which already prohibit similar content types such as defamatory, profane, or drug-related material. This alignment suggests a consistent policy across the company's digital ecosystem.

Ads are a growing part of Apple's Services business, which includes subscriptions, platform fees for in-app purchases, and ad sales. Besides the expansion into Apple Maps, the company offers ad space in Apple News and multiple parts of the App Store. In 2022, Apple announced a major update to its App Store advertising business, expanding ads out of search and into app pages and the home screen.

At least for now, the company appears to be taking a more restrained approach in Maps. Reserving ad space for local businesses and landmarks may help maintain the perceived quality of the user experience, avoiding the potential negative associations with certain service categories. The long-term impact of these restrictions on ad revenue and local business engagement remains to be seen.
