Apple repositions Siri as AI companion in major WWDC 2026 overhaul
Two years after a delayed promise, Apple unveils a conversational AI assistant capable of accessing screen content, current world knowledge, and user-specific communication styles.

Apple has unveiled a significant transformation of its Siri assistant at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026, repositioning the tool from a traditional voice-controlled utility to an AI-powered conversational companion. The announcement, made on Monday, marks the culmination of a two-year delay following the company’s initial promise to deliver a smarter version of the assistant. The new iteration, referred to as Siri AI, is designed to function as a full-fledged chatbot capable of competing with established platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
The overhaul introduces a dedicated Siri app and fundamentally changes how the assistant interacts with users. Rather than relying solely on voice commands, Siri AI can now draw on current world knowledge to ground its responses and access information displayed directly on the user’s screen. When querying for information, the assistant will present text cards containing results from the web or details from text messages, moving beyond its historical reputation as a simple voice assistant.
On iPhones, the interface has been redesigned to live within the Dynamic Island, replacing the previous screen glow animation with a new visual cue. Users can swipe down from the Dynamic Island to search or type queries, or utilise the side button for more in-depth answers. The assistant is now capable of executing complex tasks, including creating plans, facilitating brainstorming sessions, and providing feedback on documents by pulling data from the web, previous emails, calendars, and contacts.
A notable addition is the “Write with Siri” feature, which assists users in drafting texts within Mail and Messages. This function adapts to the user’s typical communication style for specific contacts, ensuring that drafts mimic the tone used for a particular colleague or friend. For instance, if a user typically sends direct bulletins to a manager, the assistant will reflect that style in the generated email.
The update extends across Apple’s ecosystem, with expanded capabilities on macOS and watchOS. On macOS, Siri is integrated into Spotlight, allowing users to find answers to questions from anywhere on the system. On watchOS, users can ask questions and take actions directly from their wrist. Additionally, Apple has introduced a new voice experience with customisable pace and expressivity, alongside an updated system-wide dictation feature that claims improved accuracy in spelling, punctuation, and capitalisation.
