Apple reportedly to introduce third-party AI model selection in iOS 27

Apple is reportedly planning to fundamentally alter its artificial intelligence strategy for its upcoming operating system updates by introducing a mechanism that allows users to select preferred third-party models. Under the proposed changes, the next iteration of iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 is expected to enable consumers to choose a specific AI provider to power Apple Intelligence features system-wide. This functionality, which sources are terming "Extensions," represents a significant departure from the company's historical focus on developing a single, proprietary in-house model.

The scope of this potential shift extends beyond voice assistance. Reports suggest that compatible third-party models will not only drive Siri but also support other core system functions such as Writing Tools and Image Playground. According to information provided by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, users will be able to configure different voices for different models via the Settings app once compatible applications are available on the App Store. While OpenAI's ChatGPT remains the only third-party model currently integrated into Apple Intelligence, the company is reportedly expanding its testing phase to include other major players. Sources indicate that Apple is internally testing integrations with Google and Anthropic. Notably, Google's Gemini models are already forming the backbone of Apple's upcoming Siri revamp, suggesting a pre-existing reliance on external partners despite previous restrictions on third-party usage in the ecosystem.
